Quantum information science is one of the frontier area of science and technology. It is also an interdisciplinary area of research where scientists from physics, mathematics, and computer science can contribute alike. One of the main goal is how well one can process information using laws of quantum theory. Quantum information theory aims to process information that is not amenable with classical devices. At the same time this also provides new insights into the nature of quantum world. Quantum information processing includes quantum computation, quantum communication, quantum cryptography and various information processing tasks. Not only this provides fundamental arena to investigate quantum phenomena but also gives new technological benefits like quantum teleportation, remote state preparation and and secure communications.

In the proposed programme, we hope to bring experts from all over the world and focus on various issues related to quantum information science and general quantum theory. These issues will be characterization and quantification of entanglement, quantum channels and quantum operations, role of entanglement in quantum algorithms and quantum computation, developing new quantum algorithms, understanding of capacities of quantum channels, and new communication tasks in the multiparty case.

The aim of the programme will be to have a fruitful interaction between leadings experts of the field which may lead to a better understanding of the subject. In addition, during the one month programme there will be mini workshops, seminars and discussion meetings among all the participants. The duration of the programme will be four weeks.

The International programme on Quantum Information will be held at Institute of Physics (IOP), Bhubaneswar during Jan4-30th 2010. One of the main goal is to bring together quantum physicists, computer scientists and mathematicians to discuss the current status of the field. We also encourage to present important recent developments in the area of quantum information science and pure quantum theory. It is hoped that all the participants and invited speakers will raise many open questions and fundamental issues which are yet to be understood. We will give emphasis on reviewing the major challenges in the field.

In this programme, we plan to cover various quantum algorithms, quantum communication and quantum cryptography, quantum entanglement and non locality, various quantum information processing protocols, quantum channels and operations. We will also take up topics from general quantum theory and fundamental questions related to quantum theory.

Plan of the Program

First Week: Quantum Computation and Quantum Algorithms.

Second Week: Quantum Information Theory.

Third Week: Quantum Entanglement Theory.

Fourth Week: Foundational aspects of quantum theory and extending quantum information theory to other domains of physics. These may include PT-symmetric quantum theory, relativistic quantum information theory, black holes and quantum information, some non-trivial generalization of quantum theory and topics alike.

Each week we shall have pedagogical lectures, mini-workshop and discussion meetings relating to the theme of the week. Morning hours will consist of two pedagogical lectures each of duration one and half hour. Afternoon session will consist of three seminars each of duration one hour where participants can deliver original research work. In addition tutorial session and collaborative efforts will be carried out in the evening hours.

Location: Bhubaneswar is the capital of Orissa. It is surrounded by many scenic beatuies. Some of the top attractions are famous Sun temple, Puri Temple situated near sea, Nandan Kanan, and many other historic temples.

LOCAL INFORMATION

The program will take place in the campus of the Institute of Physics. The participants and some of the invited speakers would be accommodated on the campus. The rest will be staying at the Hotel Suryansh. You would be informed about your place of stay. We will attempt to provide transportation to  International and National invitees from the airport to the place of the stay. Please look for a placard with name IOP. In the case of the Railway station, sometimes it may not be possible to provide the transportation due to the uncertainties in the arrival time. In that case, the participants can take an auto/taxi to the place of stay. The approximate cost from the station would be Rs 70 by auto.

Meals

The lunch and the dinner would be served in the institute campus (near the Library area) from January 4th-30th, 2010.  The launch time is 1PM-2.30PM and the dinner time is 8PM-9.30PM. The place of the breakfast would depend on the accommodation. Those staying in the campus would be served breakfast on campus near the library.  Breakfast time is 8.30 AM-9.30 AM. Those staying in the hotel would be served breakfast at the hotel.

Talks

For your talks, LCD projectors would be available. A laptop or a PC can be connected to these projectors. If you so choose, you can bring your own Laptop, or a talk can be loaded to a local Laptop or PC for display. Old fashioned overhead projector would also be available.

Computer Facilities

If you bring your own Laptop with a wireless access card, you can get access to the Internet easily. There will be areas available for wireless Internet connectivity. A number of PCs for Internet access would also be available.

TRAVEL INFORMATION

The program will take place at Bhubaneswar. Bhubaneswar is the capital of the state of Orissa. It is well connected by air, rail and roads to various towns and cities of India.

AIR
There are regular AIR INDIA, Kingfisher, and IndiGo flights connecting Bhubaneswar and major cities of India. One can also search at travel-portal such as Yatra.
Travellers from outside India can arrive at Delhi, Mumbai, or Kolkata and then take a connecting flight to Bhubaneswar.

RAIL
INDIAN RAILWAYS connect Bhubaneswar with most towns and cities of India.

ROADS
Bhubaneswar is located at the national highway NH5. This highway connects Kolkata and Chennai.
