enter root password. You will get # prompt.

Setup yum

Third Party Repositories: To set up the RPMFusion repositories (required for media players) :

• rpm -ivh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/free/fedora/rpmfusion-free-release-stable.noarch.rpm

• rpm -ivh http://download1.rpmfusion.org/nonfree/fedora/rpmfusion-nonfree-release-stable.noarch.rpm

Livna Repositories:

• rpm -ivh http://rpm.livna.org/livna-release.rpm

• rpm --import /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-livna

• yum install livna

To install vlc:

Enable RPMfusion first.

• yum install vlc

To install mplayer:

Enable RPMfusion first.

• yum install mplayer mplayer-gui gecko-mediaplayer mencoder

To install realplayer:

• rpm -ivh http://forms.real.com/real/player/download.html?f=unix/RealPlayer11GOLD.rpm

To install adobe flash player:

Install the Adobe YUM repository:

• rpm -ivh http://linuxdownload.adobe.com/adobe-release/adobe-release-i386-1.0-1.noarch.rpm

• rpm --import /etc/pki/rpm-gpg/RPM-GPG-KEY-adobe-linux

Download .rpm file from http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer, install it with package installer.

To install Gtalk:

Install Google video chat plugin: google-talkplugin_current_x86_64.rpm from http://www.google.com/talk/:

• rpm -ivh /home/user/Downloads/google-talkplugin_current_x86_64.rpm --nogpg

• vi /etc/sysconfig/nspluginwrapper : edit the line 'export IGNORE_WRAP' adding this :libnpgoogletalk*:libnpgtpo3dautoplugin* at the end.

To install sound-recorder:

• yum install gnome-media-apps-2.30.0-1.fc13.x86_64

To install picasa:

• Create the repo, (copy-paste in the terminal)

      cat <<EOF > /etc/yum.repos.d/google.repo

To make webcam (cheese) working (for Sony Vaio) :

• rpm -ivh http://fr2.rpmfind.net/linux/rpmfusion/nonfree/fedora/updates/13/x86_64/r5u87x-firmware-0.2.0-3.a9b2171d762b.fc13.x86_64.rpm

To install vmpk (virtual midi piano keyboard):

• yum install qsynth

• yum install vmpk

• Download soundfont from here. Put this in /usr/share/sounds/sf2/ directory.

• Open qsynth and then vmpk. Note the channel number in vmpk.

• Qsynth configuration: channel -> select the same channel number. In setup->MIDI, use alsa_seq driver, client ID: pid

• Vmpk configuration: Edit -> connections-> Output MIDI Connection-> select FLUID Synth (Qsynth1). Edit->keymap-> make your own keymap file (save in .xml format).

  ( Here is my keymap. Download the file and load in vmpk.)

Few more commands:

To update CPU temperature in the interval of 30 sec. :

• echo 30 >/proc/acpi/thermal_zone/TZ01/polling_frequency

• cat /proc/acpi/thermal_zone/TZ01/temperature (to see changes, check in the interval of 30 sec.)

(folder name TZ01 may vary)

To make root accessible from X-login:

(Fedora 13 prevents root login from X-login for security)

• vi /etc/pam.d/gdm : comment the line “ auth required pam_succeed_if.so user != root quiet”

• vi /etc/pam.d/gdm-password : comment the line “auth required pam_succeed_if.so user != root quiet”

To merge multiple pdf files:

• gs -q -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -sOutputFile=merged.pdf file1.pdf file2.pdf
