AREA OF RESEARCH:    SURFACE  SCIENCE  and  NANOSCIENCE

CURRENT RESEARCH INTERESTS:
(i) Atomic structure of surfaces, surface modification by ion irradiation.
(ii) Interface structure and roughness.
(iii)Multilayers and their ion beam modification
(iv) Epitaxial layers and Self-assembled epitaxial growth  (MBE growth, Quantum dots, Single-electron tunneling)
(v) Defects in epitaxial layers and at their interfaces.

For these studies we use Rutherford backscattering spectrometry
and channeling techniques with MeV ions from our 3MV Pelletron accelerator , X-ray reflectometry
and  X-ray standing wave techniques with MoK_alpha_1 X-rays from an 18 KW rotating anode
X-ray source and 200 keV TEM. Besides these facilities in our laboratory we use other techniques
like, EDX, SEM,  XPS,  SIMS etc. available elsewhere in the country and synchrotron radiation
       sources abroad.

We grow epitaxial layers and self-assembled epitaxial structures by molecular beam epitaxy (MBE).
In-situ characterizations are done by reflection high energy electron diffraction (RHEED) and  scanning
tunneling microscopy (STM) and scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) with a variable temperature
scanning tunneling microscope (VTSTM, Omicron) operating under ultrahigh vacuum (UHV) condition .
The VTSTM is connected with the MBE system.
