Pre-Doctoral Course

Course Outline

The predoctoral course is divided into three trimesters. The first two trimesters are about three months duration and the last is about four months duration. Following courses are given to the predoctoral scholars over one year period.

1st trimester: Mathematical Methods of Physics, Quantum Mechanics, Classical Electrodynamics, Theory of Experiments and Predoctoral Laboratory.

2nd trimester: Advanced Quantum Mechanics, Statistical Mechanics, Field Theory, Numerical Analysis and Advanced Experiments Lab.

3rd trimester: Particle Physics, Condensed Matter Physics, Nuclear Physics and Project.

It is mandatory for the scholars to attend all the courses. The contact hours for all the theory courses is about 40 hours. All of them carry 100 marks. In the last trimester, the scholars do a project which is essentially self study under the guidance of one of the faculty members. At the end of the term the scholars write a short report on their project and give a short (about 30 minutes) seminar. The projects are assigned at the beginning of the last trimester.
