Doctoral Programme

The Institute offers a Doctoral programme leading to a Ph.D degree awarded by the Homi Bhabha National Institute ( HBNI ). Students who have an MSc degree in Physics from an eligible university/institute have to qualify in a common entrance test (JEST) and an interview in order to be admitted. The students need to successfully complete a one year pre-Doctoral course to begin their Doctoral research under the supervision of a faculty member of the Institute. Research activities in the Institute is broadly divided in to the following areas:

High Energy Physics

Condensed Matter Physics

Nuclear Physics

Both theoretical and experimental research is carried out in each of the above areas. (Details can be found under the link 'Research' in the main menu.)

Research scholars are paid a fellowship of Rs. 16,000/- per month during the first year of joining the doctoral programme (i.e. same as during the predoctoral course). Thereafter, the monthly stipend is increased to Rs. 18,000/- per month. A contingency grant of Rs. 20,000/- per year is provided for buying books and for other research related expenses. Scholars are encouraged and supported to participate in relevant and useful academic meetings in India and abroad. On campus hostel accommodation is available (if the scholar prefers to stay outside, a standard house rent allowance of 20% of the fellowship is granted.) Medical facilities are available to the scholars.
